TEHRAN -- The historical Caravanserai-e Sangi (stone caravanserai) in Zanjan was registered as one of the Iranian national monuments, said Director-General of Zanjan Cultural Heritage Department, Reza Kassi, on Tuesday. The historical place was built in the era of Safavids on the orders of Shah Abbas II to provide facilities for merchants travelling between the cities. Caravanserai-e Sangi was rebuilt in the years between 1959 and 1963 and was used as a fort.
However, a project for renovation of the historical place, as the largest traditional inn in northwestern Iran, is being carried out according to traditional patterns.
